When a rumour of the death of one of the Friends came to lovemytv’s attention it gave us a chance to check out the weeks news and notice a few interesting things. Firstly it seems that Boys and Girls was quite badly received (see here for more). It does have potential though doesn’t it? The big problems are still that assistant and the fact the type of people who will want to take part are a) the type of people who are as irritating as hell b) have better things to do on a Saturday night. So maybe the prize money is a too high and wasted on the spoilt bratty winners at least the viewer has a phone vote to decide that they don’t deserve to keep their shopping.

Much sadder news is the Five have secured the rights to show the final series of Dawson’s Creek. It doesn’t really make much difference what channel shows it but shame on Channel 4 for not only giving up on it but keeping it for E4. They always promised that E4 wouldn’t affect C4 but it’s starting to. Sometimes for the better like the early arrival of the latest series of Friends but there does seem to be a longer wait for new series. Where for example is the 2nd series of The Secret Life Of Us, we’ve been waiting over a year for that. C4 still haven’t been forgiven for never showing the final series of My So Called Life. And Dawson on a Saturday night just won’t feel right, guess it’ll be taped and watched on a Sunday morning.

This is nothing to do with TV but who ever said everything had to be about TV (erm, we did didn't we, isn't that the point of all this). But isn't stocking up on ingredients for pancakes defeating the whole point of pancake day in the first place?
The first two hours of the second series of 24 left some doubts as to whether or not it could really live up to the high expectations set by the first series. Thankfully the 3rd hour was a fantastic reminder of everything that was great about 24 this time last year.

But what we really want to bitch about is this whole business of “See the next episode now on BBC3”. Why? Is there any point? Last year the cliff-hanger nature of most episodes meant there was a “must-see what happens next” mentality kick in. But flicking to BBC3 to watch next weeks episode now still means a 7 day wait until the next(+1) episode. So now we see episodes a week in advance but when it comes to the finale what do we find, well if last year is anything to go buy, a lovely making-of programme and we still have to wait to see the last episode on BBC2 the following week.
The long lost little brother of Dont Forget Your Toothbrush finally showed up on Saturday night in the shape of Boys and Girls . Chris Evan’s latest foray into tv (his idea but Vernon Kay presents) is part game show, part reality tv and part TFI. It works, mostly, but there are a few problems. Most obvious irritant is the hostess, haven’t decided if her over enthusiasm was supposed to post modern (in a Scream way) or not but she was so irritating.

Another flaw is the actual game part of the show where the 100 girls have to guess how the 100 boys answer a question along the lines of “Would you rather A or B?” and vice versa. Now it’s not just me but aren’t boys generally quite predictable, obvious and dare I say it, simple. Whereas everyone knows that men (sorry, boys) have no idea what girls are thinking even when things are spelt out to them.

When a winning team is decided, the "look at me popularity contest" to narrow the three selected from the winning team to one winner seem a bit of a let down. After one week it’s hard to judge what contestants will be like on a week by week basis but these people seemed irritating and not deserving of the money. How the general public decided that last weeks winners had spent the prize money wisely (and therefore get to keep whatever they bought) is beyond lovemytv.

But despite these complaints it’s great to see this type of programme back on TV, it’s also reassuring to know that Chris Evans still has what it takes to make great TV. What’s more the Friday show where we find out how this weeks winners have spent their daily allowance of the £100,000 prize money looks like it could be even more rewarding and possibly a little bit more challenging. After all money can’t buy happiness can it?

But one final thought, are the target audience for this show not the people who have better things to do on a Saturday night than stay in and watch TV.
